Having worked with people who have severe communication disorders, I am acutely aware of the frustration that this represents.
Many disorders may be accompanied by an inability to communicate verbally and, where conditions such as cerebral palsy also
inhibit or prevent the use of sign language due to lack of motor control, this can present serious problems.
Add to that a lack of literacy skills and where does that leave a person who needs to convey more than
"Yes" and "No"?
The approach I have provided here, which I have called "pass" uses images to convey information.
There are a number of systems available that utilise images as a means of communication but they mostly have
the same limitations in common:
»
Each symbol has a specific, prescribed meaning and, therefore, has to be learned, which can be a problem for
someone with a learning disability.
»
words and expressions are provided as a finite list, limiting the user to the prescribed vocabulary.
»
Images are static and often require arrows to indicate movement. This can be confusing to someone with a cognitive
disorder as the arrows simply add to the complexity of the image.
The following presentation seeks to address these problems with a proposal for a software product
that could bypass the need for literacy skills and even the need to "learn" the meaning of symbols.
If you are a software company or someone skilled in programming, please feel free to adopt this idea.
The images are my copyright but the idea is open to anyone who can take it forward.
There is no requirement to seek my consent to develop the idea but I would appreciate the opportunity
to provide images and animations for any product that may be developed from this.
