Photorealism:

Although photography is widely used in advertising, there is still a demand for airbrush artwork. This has the advantage of photorealism but can also be "idealised" without detracting from accuracy. Editing a photograph is always a compromise and, once the shot is taken, further control is limited. Digital airbrush images are created in layers and each detail can be edited without affecting the rest of the image.
Buick:

In this sample, the artwork is fairly simple flat colours with most of the work executed on the road suface texture. What gives this its photographic look are the reflections. Well, the reference photo was taken at a car show in a rural vilage and the actual reflections showed a clock tower and an Old World bookshop. This didn´t fit the image. The flat colours were applied and a photograph of the skyscrapers was manipulated over this. This could be changed at any point to reflect anything that was required.
Megan:

This is a "car portrait" of Laura´s Megan. Laura is a friend who had commissioned the picture. The reference photo was taken in a car park and the reflections would have betrayed this. In this instance, soft airbrushing was used to create a reflection of open space and a soft treatment was given to the whole image without any loss of detail.
Rear Wheel:

Here the tyre and road surface had been given a very detailed treatment. As with the Buick, the car body and chrome details were treated with manipulated photographs to replicate reflections.

These illustrate that artwork can replicate the detail of a photograph but a photograph cannot replicate the control of artwork.
